Impressions from the Aftermath of the Madeira Wildfire 2023

In October 2023 several wildfires erupted across the island, starting in Calheta and spreading to West and North Madeira.

I remember reading about brave firefighters giving their all fighting the flames.
Volunteers bringing food and water donation to collecting points or offered direct help to those affected.
Countless people supporting crowdfunding campaigns that have since then planted new trees, and helped restoring the destroyed areas.

When I returned in 2025, I stayed in the west of Madeira, in the middle of the affected area. It was devastating to notice the still visible scars and sense the land’s trauma.
